Q. I’ve seen orphanages before. What is different about Mudzini Kwetu?
There are three important distinctions:
1. Long-term vision: OHMH has a long-term vision to grow and to support girls through college. Our vision is that they be empowered to become agents of change to alleviate the poverty of their peers.
2. Total Development: OHMH works in one community at once and becomes a trusted and respected part of that community and not just a home for a few ‘lucky ones’. We provide water and advocacy for those outside but around our door.
3. Sustainability: Our projects contain profit generating mechanisms (e.g. tilapia farm) so as we will not be asking you to support the same costs in five years as now.
Q. Where is Kenya?
Kenya is on the coast of East Africa. It is bordered by Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia and the Indian Ocean.
Q. Where is Mtwapa?
Mtwapa is a small village north of Mombasa on the coast of Kenya.
Q. How much of my donation funds work in Kenya (as opposed to admin/fundraising)?
100% of your gift goes to mission because a small group of specific supporters fund the operating costs of OHMH.
Q. Is my donation tax deductible (U.S) or eligible for Gift Aid (U.K.)?
Yes.
One Home Many Hopes in the USA is a federally approved 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization and all donations are fully tax deductible. If you have any questions regarding your contribution, please email donations@onehomemanyhopes.org or call 617-230-2574.
One Home Many Hopes in the U.K. is a charitable trust eligible for gift aid. E-mail David Scott (davescott81@googlemail.com) for more information on the U.K. foundation.
Q. Why should I stop giving to my current charity and give to “One Home Many Hopes”?
You should not. OHMH is one among many organizations doing justice around the world and we encourage you to give generously to whichever cause is laid upon your heart.
Q. Do you plan to organize any fundraising events?
Yes, and you should too. However, events will not be the primary means by which we realize our mission. Our primary goal is to create a base of consistent donors: individuals, companies and corporations.
Q. How will I know what my gift has done?
You will receive a monthly newsletter by e-mail updating you on progress in the field. Please check this website for regular updates and be sure to join our contact list.
Q. I’m only one person, I can’t do much, can I?
“Let me light my lamp,” says the star, “and never debate if it will help to remove the darkness.” (Fireflies, by Rabindranath Tagore)
Q. Is OHMH a Faith Based Organization?
OHMH is not a faith-based organization, but faith in God is a fundamental part of life in Kenya and so providing our girls with the opportunity to experience God’s love for themselves is critical to our mission. We are not affiliated with a particular church or denomination, but raise our girls in a loving Christian family environment. Many of our girls profess Christianity, but some do not. We are home to all of them. Thomas Keown and Anthony Mulongo are committed Christians but our volunteers and supporters represent all faiths and none.
