OHMH In Your School

Make your school and OHMH school! Your school in the U.S. or the U.K. can play a central role in funding the education costs of OHMH. Through fundraising activities or school chapters with your students/classmates, you can provide an education to girls in Kenya.

Contact us to find out how make your School an OHMH School. We will meet with you to strategize how to do this best in your school community, support you in your efforts, and come tell the OHMH story to your students/peers as we partner with you in this cause.

Update :  September 24, 2011
“We are currently updating our school toolkits with new ideas for teachers and students. These will be downloadable shortly. In the meantime we can do even better…e-mail one of our schools team below so we can have an OHMH volunteer speak with you and visit your school.  If you like…

How you do it:

Elementary and Middle Schools : ‘Children Helping Children’ – It costs $600 per year to provide a quality education to an OHMH girl.  Sign your classroom up to send one girl to school this year.

Request our ‘School toolkit’ of resources to help you raise money in your school, and to teach essential curriculum in the process.

High Schools – Start an OHMH chapter in your High School: Most children in our region of Kenya cannot access education because they cannot afford to eat a meal a day never mind buy school books. You can make a huge impact on these kids’ lives, and make a better way for yourself at the same time.

Investing in supporting these girls’ private school education will show institutions of higher education your compassion and leadership potential. Start an OHMH Chapter in your school—It is good, it is fun, and Admissions Counselors will be very impressed…

Raise funds in your school:

Host a Video Game Competition:
Find out what video games students are playing and host a competition for a small reward. Kids love video games, so why not use this passion for a good cause?
- See our toolkit for more.

Host a Walk-A-Thon:
Have students get out and exercise for a great cause!
- See our toolkit for more.

Teach Mathematics with OHMH:
Set up the month long fundraising efforts in math class to allow students to see the connection to non-profit planning. Allow students to access practical experience running and accounting for sponsored events. Have your students create a target and a budget and develop the means to get there.
- See ‘curriculum connections in our toolkit for more.

Language Arts:
Have students write a poem about an important life experience. Have students write out the interpretation as to why this experience is meaningful to them and how this has shaped who they are as people. Then send these poems and explanations to the girls in Kenya and receive theirs in return.

What they are saying:

“We wanted to do something that would benefit our sisters in Kenya. But also do something that would unite our school around something positive. This was it.”
- Steven Gonzalez, former student of Cristo Rey New York.

“As a teacher, and Principal, this fits in with both the school curriculum, especially in the area of citizenship, but more importantly with our school’s Christian ethos. Also, the fact that we can actually ‘know’ some of the children who are being directly helped is important.”
- Michael Peacock, Principal of Brackenagh West Primary School, Northern Ireland

“Parents see our past work with OHMH a wonderful to teach their kids the important lesson of helping others. The entire community respond wonderfully to the connection of ‘children helping children’.”
- Abbi Lione, Lawrence Extended Day Program, Brookline, Massachusetts
