Kenya, Boston, Ireland, Scotland — there’s connection there, and a connection shown through music in the album Lullabies for Love. Many of the musicians you’ve met here along the music road, along with a few who may be new to you, have joined together to offer you a fine range of Celtic tinged lullabies, to benefit One Home Many Hopes in Kenya.

The Magic of Music Delights 32 Girls in Kenya
By Sean Smith – May 6, 2011

The biggest ideas often have the simplest beginnings. For Newton resident Lindsay O’Donovan, the inspiration for a major combination music project and fundraising initiative came from the act of quietly humming a tune for a sleepy little girl named Lovie who lay cradled in her arms.

One Home Many Hopes: The founding of a non-profit
By Jessica Colund – March 31, 2011

In November 2007, a group of Bostonians converged at the Irish Immigration Center in downtown Boston, the workplace of Irish-born opinion columnist Thomas Keown. Some came because they’d been inspired by Keown’s article entitled “Give a Little Bit” which had appeared in the Metro two months prior. Others came because they’d received an email from Keown with the subject heading, “Our very own Irish Potato is starting a nonprofit.”

By Laura Finaldi - February 28, 2011

Hearing journalist Anthony Mulongo tell the story of a six-year-old homeless Kenyan girl who had to care for her baby sister only to have the baby die from starvation struck the heart of Fenway High School senior Caitlin Fitzgibbon particularly hard.

“The children in Kenya—you can get thrown in jail for being homeless,” Fitzgibbon said. “It’s really unsafe for the girls.”

A new skill and a good cause: Newton sewing school to hold charity fashion show

This weekend, Hipstitch’s inaugural class – 55 crafty students from kindergarten to grade 6 – will display their creations for parents and friends at Hipstitch’s second fashion show. Proceeds from the show will go to benefit One Home Many Hopes, a charitable organization that provides education and homes for orphaned girls in Kenya.

“Many of the girls in the orphanages in Kenya have never seen a needle before,” Day said. “So in addition to raising money with the fashion show, we have also had the girls make hand-painted fabric, which we will sew into aprons that can be sold.”

Small Charities Get an Education in Fund Raising — and Filmmaking
By Caroline Preston – November 30, 2008

Each time Thomas Keown has asked people in recent weeks to donate to his charity, he’s had a camera rolling. The nonprofit group Mr. Keown established last year, One Home Many Hopes, is one of two charities participating in a documentary film project to show how small nonprofit groups can successfully raise money.

The filmmaking effort was started by Kristy Hall, a nonprofit consultant in Charlottesville, Va., who wanted to demonstrate how some of the fund-raising ideas she had developed could help small organizations. After recruiting a film company to help, Ms. Hall selected two charities, Mr. Keown’s Boston group, a volunteer-run effort that benefits orphaned girls in Kenya, and Student Movement for Real Change, a Washington organization with three employees.

Ms. Hall challenged the charities to raise $20,000 in 30 days—a small sum by many fund raisers’ standards, but one that initially seemed overwhelming to Mr. Keown.

Giving Far and Wide
By Adrian Walker – April 15, 2008

The impoverished street children of Mtwapa, Kenya, are far removed from Boston in every sense – geographically and psychologically. That last gap, though, is beginning to close just a bit.

Since late last year, a group of Bostonians has quietly been lending support to an orphanage supporting three dozen girls in one of the poorest parts of Kenya. They have funded a website and wireless Internet access. They have thrown a St. Patrick’s Day benefit on behalf of children who have never heard of St. Patrick.

They have been brought together through the unending persistence of Thomas Keown, an Irish immigrant whose life changed last year on a trip to Kenya.
